17 Nov 2008 - 15:41 - Leading PC game designer will be presenting during the BPO Summit on December 2 and 3

Chris Natsuume, co-founder and creative director for Boomzap Entertainment (a leading developer of casual games), will be presenting in the game development track of the BPO Summit for both December 2 and 3.

Chris is best known for being the lead producer for Far Cry, one of the most successful FPS (First Person Shooter) games for the Windows PC. Far Cry has sold more than a million copies worldwide and has been translated into versions for various platforms (Nintendo Wii, XBox, Playstation, and arcade) as well as a movie.

Chris will be talking about his experiences in establishing Boomzap, and hopefully share lessons to others planning to set up their own game development company.

11 Nov 2008 - 17:14 - First International Workshop on Green Communications (GreenComm'09)

Welcome to GreenComm'09!

The steadily rising energy cost and the need to reduce global CO2 emission to protect our environment are today's economical and ecological drivers for the emerging consideration of energy consumption in all fields of communications. Triggered by network operators experiencing energy cost as a significant new factor of their calculation, researchers have started to investigate approaches for reducing power consumption and manufacturers have started offering energy-efficient network components. Also standards bodies, such as the IEEE, are already developing standards for energy-efficient protocols. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored.

The First International Workshop on Green Communications (GreenComm'09), held in conjunction with the IEEE International Conference on Communications (IEEE ICC 2009), will bring together academic and industrial researchers for discussing energy-efficient communications. It will close the gap between the already established conferences and workshops covering energy efficiency for IT on one side and for wireless sensor networks on the other side.

Mr. Hirosha Sekiguchi, JICA Advisor to the DOTC, Philippines and Mr. James Santiago, Chairman of the Society of Broadcast Engineering, visited Ateneo to discuss the latest technology in terrestrial digital broadcasting systems. Of interest here is to performance test measurements of a local digital broadcast architecture that can be tested in the Ateneo using a Japanese offering by ARIB. The Ateneo Innovation Center researchers attending the meeting were Engr. Cesar Pineda, Engr. Noh Guico, Dr. Nathaniel Libatique, and Dr. Greg Tangonan. It was determined that the Ateneo can perform independent tests of the ISDB-T system and to experiment with new service delivery architectures for education networks, disaster preparedness, and local government communications. The Ateneo researchers received copies of the Technical report describing the terrestrial broadcast performance and witnessed mobile reception of digital TV broadcast coming from the Gemnet.

Mr. John Ritchie from SiTest? Solutions visited the AIC, hosted by Dr. Celso Co and Mr. Carlos Oppus.

September 5, 2008

Nat Libatique, Greg Tangonan and Paul Cabacungan visited SUNPOWER Philippines Manufacturing, Inc. in Laguna Technopark to discuss the Ateneo Smart Solar Systems projects that have been using SUNPOWER 200 watt arrays. The Ateneo presented their work to Mr. Chuck Stone, Manufacturing Manager, who had originally sponsored the free arrays for the research projects. The presentation covered clean water systems, growth of algae under artificial photosynsthesis, electrolysis for hydrogen production and the cleanup of waste water, and wireless sensor monitoring for solar systems. The Ateneo work on cleaning rainwater may prove to be a good program for a joint SUNPOWER - Ateneo deployment. The is discussing the possibility of building a 2kW solar PV system for the Ateneo that will be used for Smart Solar Systems Research.
